TEK

“We are where we are by the grace of God, plus talent and hard work.”

Tekomin Williams, known as TEK, is best known as a member of Smif-N-Wessun and the Boot Camp Clik.

He and Steele made their first major introduction on Black Moon’s 1993 album Enta Da Stage, then broke through with “Bucktown” and the classic 1995 debut Dah Shinin’. Across the Cocoa Brovaz era, the return of the Smif-N-Wessun name, and a steady run of solo releases, TEK has stayed rooted in Brooklyn while continuing to evolve through albums, EPs, singles, collaborations, and live performance.

Legacyof Lyrics

TEK adds author to a legacy built across three decades of hip-hop.

In Legacy of Lyrics, Tekomin Williams opens up about the road from dreams of becoming a professional boxer to finding his voice as TEK of Smif-N-Wessun. The memoir moves through more than 30 years in music, his Bed-Stuy roots, private losses, faith, fatherhood, acting, and the life that continued away from the stage.

The book is also a story about persistence. TEK reflects on learning his craft in the hallways of Graphic Communication and Arts, performing around the world, and accepting that hip-hop chose him.
